Working on election day - State By-election
Expressions of Interest (EoI) are invited from people interested in working at polling places for the State By-elections to be held on Saturday 18 October 2008.
The By-elections are to be held in the State Electoral Districts of Cabramatta, Lakemba, Port Macquarie, Ryde only.
If you are interested in working at the By-election you must register your interest online. Acknowledgement of your EoI will be by email or SMS if you provide these contact details.
Successful applicants will receive an offer of employment by phone or email. Upon confirmation of availability and acceptance of a position you will be sent a letter of employment together with any other forms and information required.
Position descriptions and rates of pay for the following roles
Polling place manager (PPM)
Deputy polling place manager (DPPM)
Election official (EO)
Polling place manager (PPM)
PPM responsibilities include: attendance at an hour face-to-face training session and completion of home exercises; receipt and check of all election materials; set-up of polling place on Friday afternoon/night before the election; supervision of polling place staff; provision of accurate advice to electors, party workers and scrutineers; issue of votes to silent electors and supervision of the count of ballot papers at the polling place. Duties include package and return of materials to returning officer's office and closing/tidying up the polling place. PPMs employed on election day are required to be on duty from 7.00am. The grade of each PPM is determined by the number of ballot paper issuing tables in the polling place. For example: PPM1 (Polling place manager 1) has one issuing table while a PPM10+ has at least ten issuing tables.
Entitlements
Election day fee - between $409.55 and $533.57 (dependant on the number of issuing tables in the polling place). This may be reduced if the full day is not worked.
Training fee - $105.69 if the training requirements are completed.
Meal money - $21.90 if working past 6.00pm.
Phone allowance - $30.00 if usage of personal mobile phone is required.
Mileage allowance for use of your motor vehicle for work related purposes only may be payable.
Deputy polling place manager (DPPM)
DPPMs are appointed to large polling places to assist the PPM and may be required to provide relief for other polling place staff as required. DPPMs must complete online training; attend a two hour face-to-face training session and be on duty from 7.00am on election day.

Election official (EO)
EOs typically work as ordinary vote issuing officers who issue ballot papers to electors whose names can be found on the electoral roll. EOs may also work as ballot box guards to ensure electors do not exit the polling place without placing ballot papers in the correct ballot box. They also assist with the count of ballot papers after the close of voting.
EOs employed on election day are required to be on duty from 7.15am and to remain on duty until all work at the polling place is completed (usually by 10.30pm).
Entitlements
Election day fee - $268.71. The election day fee may be reduced if the full day is not worked.
Training fee - $20.67
Meal money - $21.90 if work past 6.00pm
Superannuation - $26.05 taxable cash allowance for full days work in lieu of superannuation guarantee contribution if NSWEC pay for month does not exceed $450.
Mileage allowance
Mileage allowance is only payable for the position of Polling Place Manager (PPM) and Deputy Polling Place Manager (DPPM) for use of their vehicle for official work related purposes.
